Language learning is taught at Selby Community Primary School to ensure that our children develop a curiosity for other countries and cultures.
To quote a well-known Chinese proverb ‘To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world’.
We have the ambition that our children want to have many windows from which to view the world from.
The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
All children in KS2 learn French by a specialist French Teacher, starting in year 3. We believe that learning a new language is an exciting process and it should be delivered in fun, creative and engaging ways. This is mainly achieved through role play, drama, songs and games as part of a detailed lesson sequence. Throughout French lessons, children have many opportunities to practice their reading, writing and oral skills, paying particular attention to pronunciation.
At Selby CP we also incorporate elements of Talk for Writing within some lessons. This is particularly evident when studying a specific story or text linked to a particular unit of work.
Our Aims for Languages at Selby CP are:
- To provide lessons that build progressively on language skills from year 3 through to year 6.
- To develop in pupils an interest in learning a foreign language which can enrich their lives and their future.
- To celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to encourage children with their language learning.
- To teach children specific skills of learning languages by becoming aware of linguistic patterns to ensure a strong knowledge of language.
- To foster and encourage the confidence, desire and ability to learn a language which is evident in high quality work.
- To celebrate the diversity of language within our school.
- To demonstrate the purpose of language learning and how this fits in with the wider world encouraging an awareness of intercultural understanding.
- To build linguistic competence within all pupils through vocabulary progression.
