Art is taught at Selby Community Primary School to ensure that children are able to express themselves creatively in many forms and to allow them to understand the importance of their self.
To paraphrase Jackson Pollock ‘Art is self-discovery. Every artist expresses who they are.’ At Selby CP we encourage this discovery.
We aim to allow our children the opportunities to explore and experiment with a wide range of art concepts.
Our aims for Art within Selby Community Primary School are:
- All pupils have the opportunity to generate ideas in the skills of design and develop the techniques to produce creative pieces of work.
- All pupils become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage as well as other art and craft techniques.
- All pupils develop skills of judgement and evaluation through creative discussion, comparing creative artistic design.
- All pupils develop their knowledge of great artists throughout history both globally and locally; and their link to an art form.
At the heart of our Art provision, we provide excellent opportunities to explore and develop techniques within many different mediums. Throughout each year, the children will have hands on experience of different mediums within paint, textiles, sculpture, printing, collage and digital media to develop their artistic skills. The children will be introduced to a range of artists, architects and designers who have differing styles throughout their time within school. This shows our pupils there is a purpose to completing art and offer a pathway to a possible future aspiration.
We are committed to enabling all children to make excellent progress in their knowledge and skills in Art. Our expectations for what should be achieved by the end of each year group are divided into four key areas. They are:
Generating ideas – Skills of designing and developing ideas.
Making – Skills of making art, craft and design.
Evaluating – Skills of judgement and evaluation
Knowledge and Understanding – Acquiring and applying knowledge to inform progress.
We also believe that children should have the opportunity to exceed these expectations and demonstrate ‘Mastery’ of these concepts where they are able. At Selby CP, we consider ‘Mastery’ to be the ability to demonstrate the key concepts with a deeper understanding and mastery and which are above the norm for their peer group. These opportunities are always encouraged within each session.
